Details of approximately 4.5 million passengers, including passport and credit card information, were compromised in a massive data breach on national carrier Air India, according to a statement issued late Friday by Air India.
“As part of our dedication, we would like to notify you that SITA PSS, our data processor of the passenger service system, recently informed Air India of a data security breach involving personal data of some passengers, including yours,” the airline said in a personal communication to those whose information was stolen. The identity of the affected passengers was given to Air India by the data processor on March 25 and April 5, 2021, according to the letter.
“We are sending you a personal communication about this data security breach. The breach included “personal data recorded between August 26, 2011 and February 20, 2021, with details including name, date of birth, contact information, passport information, ticket information, frequent flyer data, and credit card data,” according to the statement.
In February, the sophisticated cyber-attack by AIR India passenger-service provider SITA based in the Swiss state of Geneva resulted in a certain number of national passengers being leaked personal data.
Air India said that it is in contact with various regulatory agencies in India and abroad, and has informed them of the incident as per its obligations.
After the data security incident the airline said it was taking the following steps: secured compromise servers, the involvement of external data safety incidents specialists, notified and discussed with credit card issuers and reset the frequent flyer programmers passwords for Air India.
